What an Idle Fee Actually Is (And Why Networks Charge It)
An idle fee is not a charging fee. It's a parking fee that happens to be enforced by the charging network instead of a meter maid. Once your car finishes replenishing — or the charging rate tapers down near a full battery — the network starts a separate clock. If you leave the car plugged in past that point while other drivers are waiting for the same stall, the idle fee kicks in, billed per minute, until you move the car.
The logic is capacity management: a DC fast-charging stall costs a lot to install and serves the network best when it's turning cars over, not hosting one car for an extra forty minutes while the owner shops. Every major network runs some version of this:
- Tesla Supercharger. Tesla applies an idle fee once a vehicle is done charging and the Supercharger station is at 50% capacity or more; moving the car within five minutes of the session ending waives the fee, and the rate doubles if the station reaches 100% capacity.
- Electrify America. Electrify America charges a flat $0.40-per-minute idle fee once ten minutes have passed after your charging session ends — the same rate and grace period network-wide, per Electrify America's own FAQ as of August 2026 — separate from its station-specific per-kWh energy pricing.
- EVgo. EVgo does not publish a standard network-wide idle fee the way Tesla and Electrify America do — its own help-center guidance on leaving a vehicle plugged in after charging describes etiquette consequences (other drivers may unplug you) rather than a billed penalty. Some third-party-hosted EVgo stations may apply their own parking or overstay charges, so check the specific station in the EVgo app rather than assuming a network rate.
None of these fees are hidden in the sense of being undisclosed — they're published in each network's terms and usually flagged in-app. They're hidden in the more ordinary sense: nobody reads the fee schedule until the notification hits their phone mid-errand, and by then the clock's already running. Rates change, so treat any specific number you see quoted — including the ones above — as something to confirm on the network's current page before you plan around it.
The Per-kWh Math: DC Fast Charging vs. Home Electricity
Idle fees are the visible annoyance. The bigger, quieter cost is the per-kWh rate itself. DC fast charging at a public station isn't priced like your utility bill — it's priced like a service, because it is one: real estate, high-voltage equipment, and the convenience of filling most of a battery in twenty to forty minutes all get built into the rate.
